The Partition of India into two nations-India and Pakistan in 1947 led to a series of land, water and border disputes. Both the countries also accused other of not protecting the interest of minorities The accession of the Princely States of Kashmir by India was not at all acceptable to Pakistan and since then, Kashmir has remained a subject of dispute between the two countries. India has fought three major wars with Pakistan over the Kashmir issue, the recent being the Kargil war of 1999.
Kargil war-
India has always followed a policy of mutual and friendly dialogues between the two nations to solve their issues. The Agra Summit of July 2001 was an attempt in this direction. Prior to this, the Simla Agreement of 1972 was signed between the Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and Pakistani President Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. It was agreed that both countries would 'settle their disputes by peaceful means through bilateral negotiations In 1976, diplomatic and trade relations were also re-established. The Lahore Agreement between the Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee of India
and Nawaz Sharif of
Pakistan also aimed at ending all disputes. But, Pakistan continues to support the terrorist activities in Kashmir and Punjab The acquisition of deadly nuclear weapons by Pakistan is also a major concern for India. In the recent years, efforts have been made to maintain cordial and Inendly relations between the two countries. The 2003 Ceasefire agreement, the Delhi-Lahore Bas Service inaugurated in 1999 by Atal Bihari Wpayee, new buses running between Srinagar and Muzaffarabad, Lahore and Amritsar and revival of the train route of Samjhauta Express are some of the measures undertaken by both the countries to maintain harmonious relations. The development of bus and train routes have facilitated the reunion of many families after so many years of Partition. It has also helped in the movement of travellers and pilgrims.
Thus, we see that after independence, India has been successful in all spheres. It has also maintained friendly relations with its neighbouring nations. The Government of India is making all efforts to overcome its failures and transform India into a developed nation.
